I WASN'T ABLE TO SEE YOUR SADNESS

I wasn't able to see your sadness, 2023, 157 x 14.7 cm, ink on paper
This piece was created after the passing of my father, drawn in one continuous flow using natural objects found in Latvia, my land of heritage. Inspired by the cultural significance and movement the Daugava river, the leporello, unknowingly at first, became a metaphor for my journey through grief, with marks flowing freely across its pages.
While making this work, I was listening to the combined women’s choirs of the 2023 Latvian Song and Dance Festival, singing, Kur tu biji, bāleliņi (Where were you, brother), which seemed to carry a pace and rhythm that guided my mark making.
